In a tribute to the late fashion revolutionary Virgil Abloh, a new skatepark was unveiled by Surf Ghana in partnership with the Daily Paper and Off-White.
Located at Shiashie in the East Legon area, the Freedom Skatepark’s design spans 500 square meters (5,382 square feet) and includes the Ghanaian Adinkra symbol ‘Fawohodie’, which is said to represent independence, freedom, and emancipation.
During the opening ceremony for the park, which includes a celebration and performances from local artists, a tribute to the late designer will be included.
“The Ghanaian ambassador and exceptional creative leader believed and supported the Collective’s initiative since its inception, and had been involved in the development of the Skatepark for the last four years,” the press release states.
This will be Ghana’s first skatepark, which Surf Ghana intends to use as a site for various art and sporting events including workshops, women-only skate training, and exhibitions. “This skatepark intends to soon become a home for the youth to truly and freely express themselves,” Surf Ghana explains.
There are also plans in place for a café and skate shop to be opened within the first quarter of 2022. As well as allowing more spaces for the public to enjoy, this will also create job opportunities.
With continued use and the building of a community, the nonprofit organization hopes that it will lead to the country’s participation in Olympics skateboarding events in the future.
