Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 Could Come With Lossless Audio, Charging Case With Sound

New leaks have emerged regarding Apple’s next generation AirPods Pro, which are rumored to be arriving in the fourth quarter of 2022. 

Reputable insider Ming-Chi Kuo, who had previously said the company is working on a foldable 8-inch iPhone and accurately predicted the launch of a glass-encased iPhone, said in a note seen by AppleInsider and 9to5Mac that the AirPods Pro 2 could come with lossless audio support, as well as new charging case that can emit sounds so it’s easier to locate when misplaced. 

“We expect Apple to launch AirPods Pro 2 in 4Q22 with new selling points, including a new form factor design, support for Apple Lossless (ALAC) format, and a charging case that can emit a sound for users to track,” Kuo wrote in the note. 

According to CNET, lossless audio differs from usual compression methods as it manages to retain details from the original recording while still shrinking file sizes.

In addition, Kuo said that Apple could introduce health features including enhanced hearing, temperature readings, and posture monitoring to the upcoming AirPods.

“AirPods may support health management functions in the future,” Kuo said. 

This prediction is in line with an earlier report from October 2021, which alluded to possible plans for AirPods to double up as hearing aids or a thermometer.  

Design-wise, AppleInsider noted that recent leaks have shown the earphones with a shortened stem. It’s also expected that “the main chip may be significantly upgraded,” from Kuo’s previous predictions. 

It’s exciting that this year’s AirPods Pro could be a huge upgrade from the initial iteration, though it’s likely that more features could point towards a higher price point.
