Albania Renames Capital Street Where Russian Embassy Is To ‘Free Ukraine’

Albania has plans to rename a street in Tirana, its capital, to ‘Free Ukraine’ in honor of the country’s bravery and resistance in the face of the ongoing invasion.

Notably, both the Ukrainian and Russian embassies are located on the street, with the name change sending a strong message to the Kremlin in light of the growing disapproval towards its actions. 

“Our generation will be marked by this bloody Russian aggression, and the heroic resistance of Ukraine should be remembered in our public places,” Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj told Reuters.

“The Russians will have to work, live, and get their mail on a ‘Free Ukraine’ street address,” he added.

According to Euractiv, other countries in Europe have taken similar steps to pay homage to the Ukrainian spirit.

For example, a road in Vilnius, Lithuania will be renamed ‘Ukraine’s Heroes Street’, while a street in Riga, Latvia will be known as ‘Independent Ukraine Street’.

The new Albanian street will be inaugurated in a ceremony next week.
