Mark Zuckerberg Confirms NFTs Are Arriving On Instagram, One Way Or Another

With Meta hoping to lead the charge into the metaverse, immersing Instagram in Web 3.0 would be the next natural step. And that’s what it’s about to do—Instagram, a pioneering showcase for mobile photography and art, will soon take in non-fungible tokens as its latest tier of digital art.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg officially revealed at SXSW that NFTs are making their way to Instagram, though he didn’t disclose when or how exactly that would happen.

“We’re working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term,” Zuckerberg announced, as quoted from Engadget. The announcement corroborates with a report from January detailing Meta’s plans to welcome the display and sale of NFTs on Facebook and Instagram.

Zuckerberg also hinted at the possibility of minting NFTs directly on Instagram. “I’m not ready to kind of announce exactly what [the NFT plan is] going to be today,” he said, “but over the next several months, [there’ll be] the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.”

The Meta CEO cited “clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse” as one of the things Instagram users might be able to mint as NFTs one day, though “there’s a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.”

The Financial Times was first to report Instagram’s intention to bring NFTs on board. The news outlet disclosed back in January that both Facebook and Instagram had been working on features to display NFTs as profile pictures, as well as a system for minting NFTs.
