Although it seems Netflix has turned a blind eye to the account sharing habits of users in years past, the streaming service has finally decided to address the matter.
According to Variety, an upcoming pilot program in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru will enable users to share their accounts “easily and securely, while also paying a bit more,” as Director of Product Innovation, Chengyi Long, puts it.
The new “add an extra member” feature will allow users of Netflix’s Standard and Premium plans to add up to two more accounts for others they don’t live with for US$2.99 each.
This means the new additions will receive their own profiles, login details, and personalized recommendations.
In addition, the streaming service plans to test allowing subscribers to transfer existing user profiles to new accounts. Users in the same three countries will be able to preserve their recommendations when moving to a new or extra member account.
At the moment, it’s unclear if the plan will be expanded further to other markets globally.
“We’ll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world,” said Long.
