In a new venture, IMAX is partnering Kodak, Panavision, and FotoKem, and tapping on the expertise of famed filmmakers—including Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele—to create its future film cameras.
Other than big names Nolan and Peele, it plans to consult other cinematographers, such as Linus Sandgren (No Time To Die), Rachel Morrison (Black Panther), Bradford Young (Arrival), and Dan Mindel (Star Trek).
IMAX has said it intends to add at least four new cameras to its lineup over the next two years, the first of which is expected to debut late next year. The forthcoming cameras will utilize the brand’s proprietary 65mm film.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, these new film cameras will be offered alongside IMAX’s digital cameras, which is currently produces with camera maker ARRI.
“IMAX film brings images to life. From resolution to color to sharpness and overall quality, there is nothing compared to using IMAX film cameras today,” said Nolan.
“Filmmakers and movie fans worldwide should be thrilled at the prospect of new and improved IMAX film cameras—I know I am,” he added.
