While the world of beauty has begun opening its eyes to the spectrum of shapes, sizes, and backgrounds out there, the travel industry—meant to acquaint people with the cultures of the globe—isn’t as versed in representation.
Luxury cruise line Celebrity Cruises is looking to paint a more colorful, authentic picture of people who travel with its new All-Inclusive Photo Project, where you’ll find refreshing images of cruise passengers including those of ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The photos are open-source and free to download to encourage more travel companies to start using inclusive imagery.
Behind the lens are world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz; English documentary photographer and triple amputee Giles Duley; Black, queer New York-based photographer Naima Green; and Malaysian-Chinese, Australia-based photographer, filmmaker, and creative director Jarrad Seng.
The series endeavors to rewrite the meaning of “all-inclusive” in the business, which typically refers to travel packages, says Celebrity Cruises’ CEO Lisa Lutoff-Peto.
“What Annie and all of the talented artists involved in this project have captured so beautifully, is that for vacations to really live up to the marketing moniker ‘all-inclusive,’ then they should start by using images that are inclusive of all, not just a few,” Lutoff-Peto details in the press release.
The project spotlights travelers like John Forté, a Black recording artist who is now working with at-risk youth to steer them off a path of drugs and crime; cancer survivor, amputee, and three-time Paralympian Amy Conroy; Filipino non-binary model Micah Ramos; and South Sudanese social worker Ester Onek.
