Floating Dials? Nope, This Is A Watch Covered In The World’s Blackest Paint
Forget the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. How about one that’s completely decked out in Vantablack, the world’s blackest black paint ever made?
Created by Surrey NanoSystems, with the rights later exclusively bought over by Anish Kapoor, the incredible paint uses vertically aligned nanotube arrays (hence, Vanta) to absorb 99.965% of visible light, allowing the viewer to see nothing but an empty void.
Since then, many other developments have surfaced claiming to be as dark as Vantablack, such as Musou Black and BLACK 3.0.
Previously, H Moser & Cie had released a limited-edition US$75,000 timepiece that featured a Vantablack dial.
This time, it’s upped the ante even further by coating an entire watch case in the color’s featureless depths for the brand-new Streamliner Chronograph Blacker Than Black.
Due to how light strikes the watch, it appears in photographs as if the white dials—a stark contrast to the Vantablack casing—are floating in mid-air.
However, if you’re thinking of getting your hands on one, it isn’t up for sale just yet.
According to Gizmodo, the prototype on display was too fragile to be worn or handled without damage, though the brand’s chief did tell Hodinkee it was planning on making the finish more durable so that the watch can eventually be launched as a collector’s item.
Imagine it slipping off in the dark and never finding your timepiece again!
