Away from the glare of spotlights, Gucci is making a different kind of statement in the wake of Alabama potentially overturning Roe v. Wade.
The state has walked back on the decision that legalized abortion, and reports of the US Supreme Court possibly following suit have left reproductive rights supporters in a state of uncertainty.
Gucci has now pledged to cover travel costs for US employees who require healthcare “not available in their home state,” the Italian fashion house shared in a statement published by Dazed. The effort is aided by Gucci’s global nonprofit Chime for Change, launched in 2013 with Beyoncé and Salma Hayek.
According to the company, ever since the founding of its charity, Chime for Change has raised more than US$19 million to benefit movements supporting historically marginalized women and girls worldwide.
In light of an impending tumult of women’s reproductive rights, Gucci and Chime for Change have promised to continue backing nonprofit partners that fight for human rights or provide access to reproductive healthcare.
The move echoes the message conveyed at Gucci’s 2019 Cruise fashion show, where models were dressed in a ‘My Body My Choice’ blazer and a gown with a sequined uterus. Another sweater displayed the date ‘22.5.78’, a nod at the date Italy legalized abortion.
