Volkswagen Reveals ‘Star Wars’ Minivans So You Can Steer Into Light & Dark Sides

To commemorate this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, Volkswagen has unveiled two exclusive ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ ID Buzz designs, in both the ‘Light Side Edition’ and ‘Dark Side Edition’ for the franchise’s most ardent fans.
In order to come up with the special look, designers from the automaker and Lucasfilm created adhesive films on the body of the vehicles, resulting in skins that represent both the light and dark forces—à la Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader—who will both feature in an upcoming Disney+ series.
The Light Side Edition microbus features a beige reminiscent of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s tunic, with the shiny chrome on its upper section added as a nod to the spaceships and droids in the Star Wars universe.
No detail was spared, with even the blue line on the side of the vehicle bearing meaning, referencing the character’s iconic lightsaber. Logos of the Rebel Alliance adorn the side windows and rim caps, with customized 21-inch wheels completing the look.
On the Dark Side Edition cargo vehicle, the designers made use of black and red to create an “ominous” look. Shiny black film coats the lower body of the car, while its upper section dons a matte black.
The car’s sidelines, headlights, light strips, and window surfaces are bathed in a red hue, inspired by Darth Vader’s lightsaber, while its body and wheel rims bear the logo of the Empire.
“The opportunity to explore how Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Volkswagen brand could come together on a vehicle was pure fun,” said Doug Chaing, Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm.
“The themes of good and evil, light and dark aren’t necessarily concepts we apply to cars. The ID Buzz collaboration offered a unique opportunity to have the cars become graphic reflections of two iconic characters,” he added.
