At the recentWorldwide Developers Conference, Apple offered fans a sneak peek at the upcoming iOS 16—which includes undoubtedly the biggest-ever update the technology giant has made to its Lock Screen. With new sharing, communication, and intelligence features, this software upgrade promises to change the way you experience the iPhone.
With iOS 16, Apple has decided to hand over the reins to the users, allowing a more personalized Lock Screen. Apart from the wallpaper, of which the company has added a new gallery with special Pride and Unity collections, you’ll be able to change the look of the date and time settings, with choices of different type styles and colors.
Similar to the interface of the Apple Watch, the Lock Screen will offer widgets you can incorporate to keep up to date with what matters at a glance, ranging from upcoming events to weather updates, battery levels, time zones, and more.
Live Activities is another feature being introduced, allowing users to keep track of what’s happening in real-time, including sports updates, food delivery orders, or workouts. Plus, with the option of creating multiple Lock Screens, users can switch between different images and widgets with just a simple swipe.
While it’s not a new feature, Focus will get simpler yet more powerful in iOS 16. Connecting it to the Lock Screen, users will be able to pair the wallpaper and widgets to a particular Focus—during which apps and notifications will only display content that’s relevant to that setting, allowing you to eliminate unnecessary clutter.
Interestingly, and perhaps one of the biggest design changes, notifications will now roll up from the bottom instead of appearing at the top of the Lock Screen, which Apple said will allow users to have a clearer view of their personalized pages.
Aside from the major updates coming to the Lock Screen, iPhone users can look forward to other tweaks that will come with iOS 16, such as seamless sharing to the family iCloud Shared Photo Library, edits in Messages, a new scheduling function for Mail, and more.
The developer preview of iOS 16 is now available to Apple Developer Program members, and a public beta will be released to iOS users starting next month. The full software upgrade is scheduled to roll out this fall.
