Universal Music Brings Its Entire Library To People With Dementia

Music Health, a Music Wellness Technology innovator, has teamed up with Universal Music Group (UMG) to bring the latter’s extensive music collection to people dealing with dementia.
The partnership births a new app called Vera, a music intervention tool dedicated to dementia patients that curates music stations—including the entire Universal Music library—according to users’ moods to help them cope with changing emotions.
The app has been under development by Music Health for the last three years as it sought to better understand how the mind can benefit from music. Whenever the user is feeling particularly affected by their emotions, all they need to do is pull up the app and put on the music to alleviate their distress.
Vera analyses the person using the app and takes information such as age, the place they grew up, and how they respond to different types of music. The app then autonomously selects music for different mood types based on the user and presents them in different categories.
Music can hold special memories that take the listener back to a certain time and place in their lives. A majority of people with dementia experience Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD), which can evoke feelings of anger and irritation. Music is used as an interception of these feelings.
With access to UMG’s unrivaled music catalog, users will find everything they need and more. Vera is available in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and the US, where a 12-month care plan is going for US$89.99.
