If there’s one thing fans remember from 1997’s Batman & Robin, it’s the infamous costume donned by George Clooney. Yup, the one with prosthetic nipples.
Now, the original screen-worn costume, which appeared in the film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chris O’Donnell, Uma Thurman, and Alicia Silverstone, is being put up for auction, with a starting bid of US$40,000.
According toHeritage Auctions, the suit was constructed from cast foam latex, vinyl, resin components, leather, and other mixed media elements, featuring the signature cowl, full-length superhero cape, muscle tunic with the Batman icon, muscled tights, finned gauntlet gloves, and knee-high boots to complete the look.
While the costume may now be more of an inside joke, Robb Report notes that it was originally designed to be “anatomically correct.”
Lead sculptor Jose Fernandez said he had constructed the suit according to the design dreamt up by costume illustrator Miles Teves, and that in the original comic books, Batman donned costumes that resembled “a second skin,” akin to spray paint.
Whatever your take on the matter, it’s not every day you get such a storied piece of cinematic history offered to the public. Head here to check out the lot.
