‘Pawternity Leave’ Gives New Pet Parents Time To Care For Their Furkids

Whether you would much rather have a pet than a screaming human child, it doesn’t matter—over at some companies, they don’t discriminate. In fact, they accept all forms of family planning, even those exclusively involving pooches and felines.

As reported by ABC7, a number of companies have included “pawternity leave” in their policies so new pet parents can help their furkids adjust to their homes.

Mars Petcare—the owner of Pedigree and Whiskas—for instance, allows employees to take at least 10 hours off, and up to a week, to help their new pet acclimate to unfamiliar surroundings. Beyond this duration, owners have the choice of taking their pets to work. Pet-sitting service Rover has a similar program.

Beermaker BrewDog, whose love of pets is evidenced by the name, started giving out one-week pawternity leave in 2017 and hasn’t looked back since. 

Customer analytics company MParticle lets staffers take two weeks off to care for new pets, on the account that the furry friends are shelter pets. Other firms that offer this benefit include cleaning supplies company Zogics and marketing company Collective Measures.

The saddest part about living with these cuddly companions is that they leave us too quickly. To help grieving pet parents cope with the loss of their dogs or cats, some companies also offer pet bereavement leave.
