In Japan—and elsewhere, for that matter—it’s not raining cats and dogs. Tokyo recently suffered its most enduring heatwave, with temperatures running as high as 95°F for nine consecutive days.
This time of year is normally ideal for taking your pet out on walks, but the insufferable heat has forced owners to back-pedal on the tradition. Desperate times, indeed, call for desperate measures, so Sweet Mommy, a Japanese clothing brand whose specialty lies in maternity and nursing wear, is turning its attention to pet parents, instead. It’s worked with veterinarians to design a wearable fan for dogs and cats who are most vulnerable to the weather as they can’t shed, Reuters reports.
Rei Uzawa, the president of the label, was compelled to find a cooling, walkable solution for pets as her own pet chihuahua hasn’t taken well with the blistering heat.
The wearable is called ‘Cool Dog’, though it’s notably also fit for felines. It weighs 30 ounces and is attached to a mesh shirt to circulate air around its wearer’s body.
