Plastic-Free Cling Wrap Is Made From Potatoes For A Guilt-Free Packed Lunch
By Nicole Rodrigues, 18 Aug 2022
Plastic wrap could be changing its name to “potato wrap” as an Australian materials science company, Great Wrap, has found a new way to make it from upcycled compost.
Created by Julia and Jordy Kay, the eco-friendly solution involves taking potato compost and creating a cling film that looks and feels just like the real deal.
The green cellophane is also entirely degradable and will turn into carbon and water in under 180 days after being thrown away. Once it disappears, it will leave zero toxins behind.
The potato wrap also comes with a refillable dispenser, called the Great Mate, to help eliminate waste even more. It comes in four fun colors and is made from PET plastic bottles.
The Australian firm is looking to start selling and manufacturing in America this August.
According to Vegconomist, the company is on the path of diverting 50,000 tons of potato waste from landfills, and once it expands to America, that number is set to increase to 300,000 tons by next year.
