Snap Gives Up On ‘Pixy’ Flying Camera Drone Just Months After Unveiling

Earlier this year, Snap announced a flying camera drone—dubbed ‘Pixy’—that was set to take the company, which first started out with creative filters more than a decade ago, to literal new heights. 

However, barely four months after it was introduced to the world, it seems the firm has decided to shoot the concept out of the sky, and is halting development on the device. 

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, CEO Evan Spiegel allegedly told employees that resources within Snap would be redirect and reprioritized, moving away from the US$249.99 gadget that promised to capture images and videos just by taking off from the palm of your hand. 

Engadget noted that Pixy is still available for purchase on Snap’s website, with the Journal suggesting that the brand could allow users to continue buying through the device’s existing inventory. 

It turns out that switching from software to hardware isn’t as simple as it’s made out to be. After all, as TechCrunch points out, Meta has been sharing similar struggles with its range of Portal devices, which also attracted poor consumer sales.
