Mark Zuckerberg Teases Improved Metaverse Graphics After Ridiculed ‘Selfie’
By Mikelle Leow, 22 Aug 2022
In an episode not too distant from the Sonic the Hedgehog debacle, Meta has unveiled an all-new aesthetic to its virtual-reality social platform Horizon Worlds. The move comes swiftly after internet users mocked a so-called “selfie” snapped by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the metaverse.
Zuckerberg posted the snapshot to announce the rollout of Horizon Worlds in France and Spain, posing his digital double in front of models of the Eiffel Tower and the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família.
Void of expression, the character has been likened to avatars in Nintendo Wii and The Legend of Zelda.
As if anticipating the ridicule, Zuckerberg quickly updated that the aesthetics he showed off earlier were “pretty basic,” and that “major updates to Horizon and avatar graphics” were heading to the platform soon.
Accompanying the announcement was another “selfie” of the Zuckerberg double in a much more realistic art style. With its smiling eyes, some might even argue that the new avatar looks more lifelike than the Meta CEO himself.
Zuckerberg also previewed a photorealistic scene captured in Horizon Worlds, a stark contrast to the dated gaming visuals shared just days ago.
“The graphics in Horizon are capable of much more—even on headsets—and Horizon is improving very quickly,” Zuckerberg teased. He added that more details will be made known at the forthcoming Connect event.
Major updates to Horizon and avatar graphics coming soon. I'll share more at Connect. Also, I know the photo I posted...
