Some pet owners have a soft spot for naming their furry friends after food—or more specifically in this case, after Oreos. In fact, as per Rover, the name ‘Oreo’ is the sixth-most popular option for black-and-white pets, likening them to the delicious snack we all love.
While the brand behind the tasty treat was delighted to learn of this statistic, its excitement was soon dampened when it found out that a growing number of ‘Oreos’ are being abandoned in Dubai.
As such, to commemorate International Homeless Animals Day on August 20, the company is stepping in to help its adorable namesakes (as well as others not named ‘Oreo’) in the United Arab Emirates find a new home.
The campaign is part of a collaboration with Saatchi & Saatchi, K9 Friends, and Yanni Animal Welfare, with the sole mission of getting as many abandoned pets as possible taken off the streets and given loving abodes.
“When we realized so many pets are named Oreo, we knew we had to find a way to give back. Partnering with the two biggest rescues in the region has been an honor and we can’t wait to help some animals find the forever home they deserve,” explains Ilona Morozova, Marketing Manager of Biscuits at Mondelez International, MENA.
Unfortunately, it seems that many people had turned to these cuddly animals for comfort and companionship during the pandemic, only to disown them once the world returned to normalcy and they could go about with their usual routines.
Adding to the snack’s existing ‘Stay Playful’ branding, the new initiative will see packaging reimagined with “Bring home playful. Bring home Oreo,” to fit the theme. Instead of the unmistakable blue packaging, batches part of this campaign will feature monochromatic shapes resembling animal kennels.
Customers can pick up the limited-edition range via the brand’s InstaShop, and scan the QR code present on the package to visit the adoption site where numerous lovable pets are looking to find owners who will give them the life they deserve.
“We have so many lovely adoptable dogs and we’re always looking for new ways to reach potential owners. It’s been amazing partnering with Oreo to help animals find a home for life,” said Solange Bornand, Manager at K9 Friends.
