Adidas Unveils FIFA World Cup 2022 Jerseys Celebrating Countries’ Pride
By Alexa Heah, 31 Aug 2022
As we inch closer to the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar commencing at the end of the year, Adidas has released the Home and Away federation jerseys for some of the foremost national teams to don on the world’s largest sporting stage.
Taking each kit as a “canvas for creativity” and an opportunity to “capture and express the spirit of each nation,” the design team incorporated features influenced by each country’s—Argentina, Germany, Japan, Mexico, and Spain—unique culture.
"When we design national team kits for tournaments as big as the FIFA World Cup, we always keep in mind that these designs will become a part of legendary footballing history,” quipped Jürgen Rank, Senior Design Director Football at Adidas.
“For us it’s crucial first and foremost to create kits that equip the world’s greatest footballing athletes with performance-led apparel… while at the same time always featuring unique and unforgettably iconic designs that are bold, eye-catching, and create a true sense of excitement amongst fans all across the globe.”
Argentina
First up, Argentina’s away jersey excuses vibrant purple hues inspired by the nation’s quest for a more equitable world, representing the ideals of gender equality in combination with fiery motifs referencing the country flag’s Sun of May.
Germany
Next, Germany’s home kit features a bold, black stripe right down the middle; drawing from the team’s very first shirt. Details on the collar and bindings display the iconic colors of the national’s flag, while the away jersey features a blurred ‘D’ paying homage to Deutschland.
Japan
For Japan’s home shirt, Adidas used the country’s bold three-legged-crow origami design to represent self-expression. The away jersey, on the other hand, is filled with blurred graphics—also a nod to origami—that illustrates the speed and fluidity of the team’s playing style.
Mexico
Mexico’s away jersey is certainly the most decorative of the lot, with motifs of Mixtec art throughout meant to “summon the fighting spirit of the nation.” Plus, Quetzalcoat’s serpent body makes an appearance on the shirt’s inside collar, harking to humankind’s amazing physical abilities.
Spain
Last but not least, Spain’s home jersey goes for a timeless look with the team’s famed deep red color, with references to the country’s flag across the shirt’s collar and bindings. The away kit bears a graphic inspired by the nation’s 1982 logo, when it last hosted the tournament.
Fans can show their support for their favorite teams as the kits are available online and in stores through September 12, 2022.
