Confirming previous rumors, Apple has announced the launch of the Apple Watch Ultra—a 49mm model of its famed smartwatch that features the biggest display yet.
Not only does this new device have the best battery life of the entire lineup, but it also comprises special features inspired by the most extreme activities to accompany you on any adventure.
“Inspired by the explorers and athletes from around the world, we created an entirely new category of Apple Watch designed for new and extreme environments—it’s the most rugged and capable Apple Watch yet,” remarked Jeff Williams, Apple’s COO.
Bigger & Brighter Display
Most noticeable is the Apple Watch Ultra’s larger screen, featuring a Retina display up to twice as bright as any other model. Plus, by selecting the new Action Button—in high-contrast international orange—users will be able to customize instant access to features such as workouts, compass waypoints, and more.
Improved Microphone
If you’re headed outdoors on an adventure, it’s only right to leave your smartphone behind and allow the Apple Watch Ultra to take its place. Knowing the importance of being able to answer calls on the go, the company has upgraded the device with three built-in microphones to improve sound quality in all conditions.
Should you find yourself atop a snowy mountain, the adaptive beamforming algorithm works to capture your voice while minimizing background ambient sound, making you sound crystal clear even in the windiest of environments.
To accompany the gadget, Apple is putting forth several new bands designed especially for athletes and explorers, with the lightweight woven Trail Loop band—the thinnest band to date—perfect for runners and endurance athletes.
Explorers can opt for the Alpine Loop instead, featuring a hardier two layers of woven fabric that completely eliminates the need for stitching. The top loops allow for the band to be adjusted quickly, and provides a secure attachment for the titanium G-hook fastener.
Going diving? No problem. The firm has designed an Ocean Band to extreme water sports and recreational diving, consisting of a flexible fluoroelastomer that stretches to fit your wrist, with a titanium buckle and spring-loaded loop to boot. It also comes with an optional extra-long tail that can be worn over a wetsuit.
Adapted For Elite Athletes
For the first time in an Apple Watch, the company has included a precision dual-frequency GPS, which incorporates both L1 and L5 positioning algorithms. Not only does provide the most accurate GPS detection to date, but users will also be able to record more precise distances, pace, or even route data for training.
The watchOS 9 will reveal several new features for athletes, such as the ability to measure Stride Length, Ground Contact Time, Vertical Oscillation, or Running Power. Plus, with new Workout Views, you’ll be able to view your exercise segments, splits, and elevations all at a glance.
Impressively, the device’s stellar battery life will last long enough for most users to complete a long-course triathlon, so you’ll never have to worry about your smartwatch dying on you halfway.
