Disney Peels Back Curtain For ‘Wish’, Its Centennial Animated Movie
By Nicole Rodrigues, 12 Sep 2022

“When you wish upon a star” is one of the most famous phrases to have come out of Disney—yet this invisible cosmic force has never been formally addressed in any of its movies. Now, in a new film called Wish, fans are finally getting the backstory they have all been waiting for.
In Wish, a star by the obvious name of Star falls into Rosas, the Kingdom of Wishes. It is here that it finds the heroine of the story, 17-year-old Asha, and gets her through her troubles.
Wish brings to mind the famous unsung hero that many Disney characters have wished upon to make their dreams come true, and the company has chosen this magical theme to highlight its 100th anniversary.
I can finally say what I’m working on! I’ve spent the last year and change as a story artist on Disney’s 2023 film, WISH— along with a team of incredible artists. Can’t wait to share more. pic.twitter.com/jLHijynkK7

Director Chris Buck of Frozen and Fawn Veersunthorn of Raya and the Last Dragon will be taking up the helm for Wish.
Perhaps the most anticipated aspect of the movie is the return of Disney’s iconic watercolor animation, as the last 2D animated feature produced by the corporation was Princess and the Frog in 2009. Since then, Disney has adopted a 3D animated technique to tell its stories. Wish will be a hybrid of both styles—mixing watercolors and 3D CG animation to bring Star, Asha, and her goat sidekick Valentino alive.
Asha will be voiced by Anita DeBose, who starred as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story in 2021, while Valentino will be taken on by Disney animal sidekick veteran Alan Tudyk.
Wish will be released in November 2023.
