WhatsApp Introduces ‘Call Links’ So You Can Join Group Chats With Just A Tap
By Alexa Heah, 27 Sep 2022
With the holiday season coming up soon, your distant aunt’s new favorite tool has just arrived in time to help her rope everybody in for family gatherings—even if she’s not on your contacts list.
Messaging service WhatsApp is launching a new ‘Call Links’ feature, which will allow anyone to join an audio or video call with just a tap.
Much like Zoom calls, users will now be able to create dedicated links for each chat, allowing the URL to be quickly shared around so more people can join in on the discussion.
To access the feature, simply select the option under the ‘Calls’ tab, which will then generate a shareable URL you can send to invitees. Each link will expire after 90 days of inactivity.
According to TechCrunch, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the feature is now rolling out to smartphones globally, with the company also testing its highly-anticipated 32-person video calls with a limited set of users.
With this rollout, expect more unsolicited links to come your way—be it from a strange cousin, your boss, or nasty scammers. As with any link, always check twice before you find yourself invited into trouble.
