IKEA Debuts Collection Of Sea Creature Soft Toys Made From Ocean-Bound Plastic

If you’ve always wanted a plushie of a giant sea turtle, now’s the chance. IKEA has recently introduced BLÅVINGAD, its new collection of sea creature soft toys that are meant to inspire interest in marine life. 

Though the company geared the release towards children and young teens, we won’t be surprised to find some of these adorable, cuddly ocean life forms in homes of adults.

The best part? These marine animals, aquatic textiles, and dreamy lighting options aren’t just pretty to look at, but good for the environment too. 

The soft toys, cushion fillings, rugs, storage bags, and other products in the capsule comprise recycled polyester made from ocean-bound plastic—all picked up 30 miles inland from the coastlines.

Heartwarmingly, IKEA revealed the launch was inspired by findings from its Kids’ Advisory Panel 2020, when children indicated they were “very concerned” about ocean pollution, and the risk marine life face. 

The five plushie characters—a dolphin, orca, blue whale, turtle, and octopus—were chosen based on the most-beloved ocean creatures by kids from different countries, making them the perfect companions for both learning and play, or on your couch.

“We hope that the BLÅVINGAD collection empowers children in their efforts to raise consciousness about the ocean, and that it inspires further learning about the marine world and all the wonderful creatures who live there,” the retailer remarked.
