Meta’s avatars in Horizon Worlds will finally be able to stand on their own two feet in its metaverse.

Legs are now a part of the anatomy of virtual avatars. At the Meta Connect Event 2022, CEO Mark Zuckerberg detailed how constructing body parts in the digital world is much more complex than people realize. This is partly because the headset cannot “see” your legs when you sit at your desk, or even when you are standing, as your body eclipses them.

As such, incorporating legs early on without taking the time to study their mechanics could have made for some real horror movie-esque moments.

After researching and developing suitable engines to formulate the body parts, it seems Meta is ready to hit the VR road running.

Zuckerberg notes that the groundbreaking technology of legs will first be brought to Horizon and eventually expand to other platforms as development continues.

The event also debuted a more detailed avatar creation by introducing different skin tones, clothes, hair, and facial options. With that also came an updated art style to the VR world.

After Zuckerberg was slammed previously for his basic-looking VR selfie snapped in a simulation of France, the company has decided to up its game and produce slightly more realistic-looking characters.

In related news, Meta is introducing Horizon Worlds to PCs and mobile devices, opening up the metaverse to anyone without a headset.
