The Sims 4has just held its Behind The Sims Summit that, showcasing an array of new updates coming to the game. While the creators announced upgrades to its mobile app—two new worlds, and incoming expansion packs slated to arrive sometime in the new future—the announcement of its next generation of gameplay was the true star of the show.
The Sims 4 was first announced in 2014 and has brought eight years’ worth of enjoyment to fans worldwide. The fourth iteration of the franchise is now the longest-running version, and fans have been eager for The Sims 5 to be announced.
They asked, and they received—sort of.
Instead of giving fans a preview into what they thought would be The Sims 5, they were presented with a look into a long-term concept project titled ‘Project Rene’.
Now, you may be asking, just who is Rene? Well, it’s not a person as much as a concept. Rene is set to represent “renewal,” “renaissance,” and “rebirth.”
And that may be true during a short demo during the summit. It seems as if the game is looking back to The Sims 3 as it previewed color wheels, pattern charts, and the ability to resize objects.
The Sims 4, while aesthetically-pleasing, has been void of such abilities, leaving fans thirsting for more freedom that came with its previous versions.
Project Rene also announced the arrival of collaborative play as the team demonstrated the ability to play in ‘Build’ mode with more than one person. For example, players can create a set of furniture, save it, and then a friend or someone else in the Gallery can come and work on it.
Not only that, but it seems like there will be the option to edit work across different devices in real-time.
While it might seem promising, Maxis has yet to give us a road map of Project Rene, only surreptitiously saying it might take a few years before we’re entering a new world and pulling ladders out of our Sims’ pools once again.
