MSCHF To Host 1st Exhibition With Cut-Up Damien Hirst Art, Odd Bartering System
By Nicole Rodrigues, 31 Oct 2022
MSCHF regularly keeps onlookers on their toes with each wild new addition to its stunts. Needless to say, the art collective’s first exhibition, No More Tears, I’m Lovin’ It, at the Perrotin gallery in New York City won’t be a run-of-the-mill show either.
Perrotin is being transformed into a strip mall complete with a ‘Gamestop’ displaying crude video games and a ‘Footlocker’ housing paintings of feet and imagery of classic shoes.
There will also be a section dedicated to Damien Hirst’s Spots series, where the collective has cut up into individual dots, which will be hung up.
The oddities continue as a life-sized marble statue of Jennifer Lopez in the style of Michelango comes to life. The image of the sculpture was conceptualized by artificial intelligence that based what she looks like entirely on paparazzi images of her.
However, paintings, risqué games, and celebrity effigies are just some of the things on show. There will also be a performance piece by rapper 24KGoldn, which will see him sit behind a wall with only his hands available for people to see or touch.
The antics only continue because if you see something you think would look right at home in your living room, you can purchase the work with money or… firearms.
Yes, you read that right. The strange bartering system is an extension of the group’s previous project, Gun 2 Swords, where people could trade in their guns to be turned into swords. Most notably, Grimes had the sword she carried to last year’s Met Gala made from this initiative.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you should walk into the gallery with guns literally blazing. You will instead have to make an appointment with the collective, and its members will come and collect it from you on a different date.
Perrotin is set to host MSCHF’s exhibition from November 3 to December 23.
