LEGO Launches First 3D-Printed Element You Can Buy: A Cute Toy Duck For Minifigs
By Mikelle Leow, 07 Nov 2022
LEGO has unleashed a toy for its toys! The company’s first purchasable 3D-printed element is an adorable “wooden” duck toy shaped perfectly for minifigures.
The itty-bitty item, modeled after an early toy duck that LEGO founder Ole Kirk Kristiansen crafted when the company was still selling wooden toys, is available to buy for a limited time at the LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, over the upcoming weekends in November. Interested customers, however, will need to book a visit at the Minifigure Factory to get a piece.
The ducky arrives as an accessory for the minifigure, priced at 89 DKK (US$11.95), that you get to customize during your time slot.
Notably, the 3D-printed toy bird isn’t just a stationary quack, but it even has a beak that smoothly opens and closes!
Previously, the element was given out to participants in the 2019 LEGO Inside Tour. Now, visitors can access them on the condition that they provide feedback for the item.
LEGO is handing out the toy ducks in small batches as part of a pilot to incorporate innovative 3D-printing technology in future products. It’s hoped that it can eventually harness these techniques to create a greater variety of elements.
