Athletes Can Have A Grit On Their Health With New Smart Mouth Guards
By Nicole Rodrigues, 08 Nov 2022
UK startup ORB Innovations is taking a new approach to collecting metrics by placing sensors into the mouths of athletes.
These sensors are housed in mouth guards and are mainly meant for contact sports, where one can’t wear a smartwatch. Along with a microprocessor, a Bluetooth module, and a battery, the ORB Smartguard can identify 20 different types of data—including heart rate, head impact, number of steps taken, and the overall movement of the person using it—by looking at changes in blood vessels in the mouth.
Information is then transmitted in real-time to an associated app to be reviewed by coaches and athletes.
As this is all saved on the app, coaches can track their players’ long-term performance.
ORB Smartguard is also fitted for each user using teeth impressions, has a run time of up to four hours on a single charge, and comes in 10 colors.
Currently, the device remains as part of a Kickstarter campaign, but once it reaches its goal, it could retail for US$114.
