Hendrick’s Opened An Underwater Bar With Drinks For Divers To Actually Sip On

Unlike most speakeasies, this hidden bar sat underwater. Its patrons included sharks, rays, fish, turtles, and land-walkers.
In May, Hendrick’s opened the “world’s first underwater bar”—called the ‘Pubmarine’—in an aquarium in Madrid, according to a new press release sent to DesignTAXI by creative PR agency TRUE, which spearheaded the activation with Project Seagrass and National Geographic.

Here, scuba divers could kick back with a drink of Hendrick’s Neptunia, an aptly-named gin inspired by Scottish coastal air. The concoction evokes memories of the sea with its marine botanicals, cucumber, Hendricks rose, and a citrus finish.

Guests could enjoy their gin—and even stay for a chat—underwater, thanks to specially-designed pressurized, watertight glasses, as well as state-of-the-art scuba tanks that let them breathe and drink normally without an oxygen tank.

Carlsberg, too, opened a popup bar under the sea in Sweden back in July, though its beer bottles were the same as the ones on land.
The intricate Victorian-style bar was handcrafted from “sustainable materials,” with input from biologists and oceanographers.

Project Seagrass and National Geographic also hosted workshops about caring for seagrass meadows during the campaign’s run. 2% of the gin’s sales were dedicated to the marine conservation nonprofit to continue maintaining and caring for underwater flowering plants.
