Yamaha Rolls Out $5K Magnesium Headphones Made Ultra-Light To Be Worn All Day
By Nicole Rodrigues, 28 Nov 2022
Yamaha is taking luxury and sound and melding them together in a symphonic new headset set to be one of the lightest currently on the market.
The YH-5000SE is made of magnesium, keeping it at a featherlight weight of just 11.5 ounces, perfect for all-day wearing. For added comfort, the weight is evenly distributed over the dual-layered headband to keep the wearer from feeling fatigued throughout the day.
As for ear cups, there are two options to choose from for the ultimate on-ear experience: suede and sheepskin.
However, any audiophile knows that the sound maketh the headphones, which incidentally rings true for the YH-5000SE. The device boasts Yamaha’s signature ‘Orthodynamic’ drivers, which is the brand’s answer to planar magnetic drivers and, thanks to its light weight, dramatically reduces sound distortion through the driver’s diaphragm.
The wired on-ears also have detachable OFC cables for enhanced mids, highs, and deep lows.
According to What Hi-Fi?, Yamaha began conceptualizing the headphones back in 2016, and it took the company over 1,000 different diaphragms before settling on the perfect one.
That being said, with bespoke manufacturing and materials being used, it has a price tag to match. The YH-5000SE comes in at US$5,000, and it is safe to say it isn’t targeted at those looking for something to get them through their train ride home.
