2023 will be laced with ruffles, shimmer, “weirdcore,” bright hair, and dog pool parties, says Pinterest as it peers into its crystal ball of user behavior. Users have been pinning away their dream homes, outfits, and celebrations, and their wishes are now on full display on a colorful vision board that’s likely to manifest in the year ahead.
Pinterest is extremelyconfident about its own predictions. It says 80% of its trend forecasts have come true in the last three years, and they’ve supposedly been brought to life faster than predictions from other sites.
“Our trend predictions aren’t guesswork or clairvoyance,” the company explains. “They’re based on months of data, rigorous analysis and evaluation by a cross-functional team of Pinterest employees.” This year’s Pinterest Predicts report encompasses the search results of 400 million global users between September 2020 through September 2022, so the platform is sure its data will serve as a clear “window into the future.”
Four themes that the company is focusing on this year are ‘Home’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Celebration’, and ‘Wellbeing’.
For the coming year, Pinterest foresees the ‘Hipstoric’ aesthetic as a strong interior design trend. The style involves the blending of pre-loved, vintage—often inherited—décor pieces with beloved modern items.
Another home décor theme to look out for is “weirdcore,” which the company has coined as ‘Mush-rooms’, that’s essentially maximalism with swirls of creativity and eccentricity.
In the realm of fashion, athleisure and loungewear of the past years are expected to be shoved into the back of closets in favor of ‘Romcom Core’, which consists of details like lace, tulle, ruffles, and shimmer. Pinterest says users will be dressing up for their “meet-cutes” and stepping out in more confidence with body-baring silhouettes.
Celebrations are a big thing on Pinterest, of course, so it has intel on those too. The platform envisions “pool pawties”—AKA pool parties for fur babies—to be just as important as kid-oriented gatherings in 2023.
Notably, it has also highlighted one color set to get hitched at celebrations, particularly weddings, in the year ahead. The ‘Rust Married’ theme anticipates burnt orange as the color of the year for couples’ big days.
“So long, something blue. Hues of terracotta, copper and burnt sienna will be frequent guests at weddings this year,” Pinterest describes. “Based on rising searches from Millennials and Gen X, you’ll see this smoldering color everywhere in 2023, from floral arrangements to bridesmaid dresses. And hey, if a big wedding isn’t your thing, you can-elope (sorry).”
Pinterest notes that orange symbolizes positivity, creativity, and adventure. “As people plan for sentimental moments in their lives—like weddings—it’s no surprising they’re bringing a color with such sentimental significance into the spotlight,” it continues.
On the topic of color, the platform has the scoop that ‘Gemini hair’ will dominate beauty trends in 2023.
“In 2023, two-toned tresses will take off more than ever,” explains the site. “Gen Z and Millennials are behind this rising trend in hair color that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples and pinks—‘blue and black braids’ and ‘lavender and blonde hair’ are on the up. Two is always better than one, just ask the Gemini in your life.”
And in terms of wellbeing, Pinterest expects that people will turn away from their computer screens in favor of the ‘Primal movement’, where “primitive, anti-tech workouts” that enhance posture and allow them to put down their phones will be popular. “Neck hump exercises” happens to be a popular search query, says the site.
