Home-Use Compactor Turns Plastic Shopping Bags Into Bricks For Easier Recycling
By Nicole Rodrigues, 12 Dec 2022
If you live in a house with that one plastic bag that holds all the other loose ones, this compactor might be what you’re looking for. Clear Drop’s SPC (Soft Plastic Compactor) is a device that will take your recyclable plastics and turn them into bricks.
The device looks like a regular trash bin one would find in a kitchen. The main idea behind the SPC was to reduce the hassle of storing plastic bags and prevent them from blowing away in the wind when they’re brought to recycling depots.
Shopping bags you aren’t planning to reuse, and soft plastics such as packaging film are fed into the compactor, which will compact the refuse into a solid cube. Finally, a thin layer of melted plastic holds the trash together.
The company assures that the compactor will not release levels of fumes that health and safety regulations do not accept.
Once it has been cooled, you can take the brick and place it in the bin to be sorted by your local recycling facility. It can then be broken apart and sorted.
According to New Atlas, Clear Drop is working with facilities to help them understand how the brick operates and that it can be broken open. It also added that it would not sell the SPC without their participation.
The SPC is available for preorder next month if you want to compress your recyclable trash into a brick. It retails for US$295 and should be ready to be shipped next July.
