German Trains Will Now Serve Coffee In Porcelain Cups To Reduce Waste

Passengers hopping on board the Deutsche Bahn will soon be able to drink their coffee from a porcelain cup, as the German rail operator introduces new measures aimed at reducing waste. 

Starting next year, guests will be able to choose “high-quality porcelain or glass” when ordering food or beverages, with reusable cups, plates, and bowls on offer to customers free of charge and without a deposit at all of the trains’ bistros. 

This isn’t the first step Deutsche Bahn has taken to reduce its carbon footprint. According to The Guardian, the company has changed more than 50% of its menu on offer in trains to vegan or vegetarian dishes since March this year. 

As per The Independent, passengers on board Deutsche Bahn trains will still be able to get plastic or cardboard takeaway packaging on request.

These new offerings on board the trains are set to apply from January 1, 2023, together with more widespread measures across the whole of Germany. 

While single-use packaging hasn’t been completely banned, all restaurants and cafés in the country will be required to provide an eco-friendly alternative free of charge at the turn of the new year.
