Galactic Bourbon Whiskey Will Be ‘Space-Aged’ Before Being Bottled Up
By Nicole Rodrigues, 25 Jan 2023
Mystic’s Galactic whiskey is venturing where no other whiskey has gone before and is taking a trip into orbit to complete its manufacturing process.
Mystic will begin the process with a 45% wheat mash bill and is mixed with water from the Triassic Basin Aquifer in Hillsborough, North Carolina, where the distillery is based.
When it’s ready, the distillery will be strapping five of its wheat bourbon barrels into a flight on a SpaceX rocket and shipping the alcohol into low-Earth orbit, where it will spend a year aging before it is sent back and bottled 100-proof.
Once completed, a single bottle will be reserved via a US$75,000 non-fungible token. Customers will receive the whiskey in a flight case, accompanied by a piece of wood from the barrel it was kept in space.
According to Maxim, Mystic notes that sending barrels into space is just as difficult as sending humans. The whiskey-fueled galactic adventure is set to test the limits of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, orbital mechanics, and almost every other aspect of aerospace engineering.
Placing the alcohol on such a journey is incredibly rare, and there’s no telling how the liquid will react to the conditions in space or how it will affect the flavor profile once it touches back down on Earth.
Either way, it will make for one out-of-this-world bottle of whiskey… literally.
