Oatly Debuts Climate Footprint Labels To Show The Impact Of Making Its Yogurt
By Nicole Rodrigues, 01 Feb 2023
Ever wondered how much a single packet of yogurt can impact the environment? Well, Oatly is about to tell you the exact number.
In an effort to be more transparent about its climate footprint, the food company is printing out emission labels onto its Oatgurt cup packaging so you can count your calories and your impact on the environment simultaeneously.
Each label denotes the greenhouse gas emissions through kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) per kilogram of the packaged food product, calculated by a third-party organization known as CarbonCloud. It measures the amount used by aggregating the emissions into numeric values based on the greenhouse gases emitted and the global warming potential over a 100-year period.
The company has previously employed such labels in places outside the US that have yet to take up such ventures.
Per Oatly, “consumers should have access to the information needed to make informed purchasing decisions and understand the fuller picture of a product’s impact—how it can affect both their personal health, and the health of our planet.”
The food brand remarks that the calculations on the packaging could help it achieve a 70% reduction in its greenhouse emissions per liter of Oatly products by 2029.
With the launch of this new packaging, Oatly says that it aims to educate consumers about the company’s carbon footprint and their own. It also allows them to make better and greener food shopping decisions. While no mandated enivorenmental pollution label systems exist for food companies, Oatly also hopes this will help set a precedence for other brands to follow suit.
