Samsung is kicking off the new year by announcing the Galaxy S23 lineup.
The new phones come in three different models, the S23 Ultra, the S23+, and the S23—and Adobe had a part to play in them.
Looking at the S23 Ultra, as previous versions suggest, this iteration is the most powerful out of all the siblings. The most notable upgrade is the 200MP camera which Samsung cites as its “most advanced camera.” The camera manifests on the back of the device as three large lenses and two smaller sensors, but, as is the current trend with smartphones, the camera takes up a lot of the rear.
The S23 Ultra uses pixel binning for multiple levels of high-resolution processing. The new Galaxy also offers what Samsung calls a “DSLR-STYLE” image shooting and editing in RAW and JPEG. Essentially, the brand says you can do away with fancy equipment and carry your smartphone.
It includes a 6.8-inch display whopping 200MP camera, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and an S Pen for note-taking. One area it has not upgraded is the battery, which shares the same 5000mAh battery as the S22 Ultra.
The S23+ and S23, on the other hand, boast 6.6 and 6.1 inches of screen real estate, respectively. Both are powered up by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. In terms of the camera, they house a lower 50MP version instead.
According to details revealed to CNET, Samsung teamed up with Adobe to make full-quality, raw-format photos attainable for these pocket-friendly devices—a perk pros will likely appreciate. Adobe, after all, invented the Digital Negative format used for raw images.
The report mentions that when you capture a photo on Samsung’s Expert Raw camera app via your S23, S23 Plus, or S23 Ultra, you can open it directly in Adobe Lightroom in a single tap. Though, to be clear, Lightroom won’t be preinstalled in the models, and users will first have to download it before making it their default raw photo editor.
With that said, the lineup offers a free two-month trial period for Lightroom. The software is free for mobile devices, but users will need to shell out US$10 a month to use premium features.
And as announced just a few days ago from Corning, the new models are now confirmed to host the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 screens, which ensure security and durability. Corning states that this version of the screen can be dropped from over three feet high and can withstand surfaces such as concrete and asphalt.
Outside of its performance, the new lineup is one of the most eco-friendly devices out of the entire Galaxy collection. The phones utilize pre-consumer recycled aluminum, glass, recycled plastics from fishing nets, PET bottles, and water barrels. Samsung will also release One UI 5.1, which will ship with the new devices, and select Galaxy models will get the update later.
The S23s come in Cream, Green, Lavender, and Phantom Black. Their official release is set for February 17, and prices start at US$799.99 for the S23, US$999.99 for the S23+, and US$1,199.99 for the S23 Ultra.
