Artificial intelligence is sweeping the tech sphere, and it seems there’s no stopping it. At any rate, YouTube has just announced that its creators could expect to see a suite of AI-powered editing tools on its platform.
The news came about in a letter from new CEO Neal Mohan, who said, “The power of AI is just beginning to emerge in ways that will reinvent video and make the seemingly impossible possible.”
By the seemingly impossible, he meant being able to add “fantastical film settings” as backgrounds into videos and allow the YouTube community to don virtual clothes. Beyond this, other features are being kept on the low for now, and creators can expect these updates to roll out over the next few months.
PC Mag points out that the rise of generative AI in the form of deepfakes has been a cause for concern online. While there is no word of any face-swapping technology being implemented onto the platform, the other avenues it’s looking into can still open the door for malicious acts.
With that in mind, Mohan does explain in his letter that the update will take a while to ensure “thoughtful guardrails” are put into place to protect its creators. “Stay tuned in the coming months as we roll out tools for creators as well as the protections to embrace this technology responsibly,” he wrote.
This new addition will join YouTube’s recent update, which allowed its videos to be dubbed in multiple languages.
