Experimental Handbag Made From ‘Ugly’ Electrical Cord Can Be Plugged In Too

If there’s one thing that’s regarded by most as an eyesore around the home and office, it’s the electrical cord. But what if the “ugly” thick wires could be transformed into something stylish?
That’s what designer Nikolas Bentel set out to do in his latest endeavor, in which he turned a 24-foot-long neon orange electrical cord into a fully working bucket bag. The best part? The wire still works, so you can plug it into a power source anytime.
According to Fast Company, New York-based Bentel has long been reimagining everyday objects in his studio, where he’s dabbled in creating a table made out of paper scraps and a pipe created using a pizza box.
Recently, the artist has warmed up to creating quirky handbags, such as last year’s collaboration with Absolut Vodka that gave birth to a tote in the shape of a festive espresso martini.
This time, Bentel revealed he tried out 20 prototypes of the electrical cord bag using different techniques before deciding on the final piece, which sees the wires carefully glued together in the form of a small basket.
The plugs at either end of the cord come together at the top to create an adorable handle, not leaving out any component of the mundane item. As the designer explained, the goal was to create a bag without ruining the actual cord itself.
Retailing for US$59, the Electric Cord Bag is both an art piece and a functional tool and can be used as a holder for devices such as smartphones while they’re charging at a power outlet.
