CEO and co-founder Carl Pei notes that the brand has “re-engineered everything from the ground up.” This is seen in new custom-built 11.6mm drivers and a diaphragm made from polyurethane (PU) and graphene. Nothing specifically chose the PU as it provides lower frequencies and a more precise and softer sound. The graphene, however, allows the highs of audio to come through.
Perhaps its most outstanding feature is the ability to adjust a user’s listening experience to best suit the size of their ear and how well they can hear.
Users can do so by taking tests via the Nothing X app to determine their ear structure and the range of frequencies they can hear. The results are then turned into a unique Personal Sound Profile, which will tweak the audio and make it suitable for the listener.
Ear (2) also takes a more haptic approach for its controls. Instead of having users touch the bud to control it, they will now have to ‘press’ to act. The brand notes that the change was thanks to feedback from customers who wanted to avoid accidentally activating certain buttons when touching them.
Its new battery life allows for 36 hours of total playback when fully charged. In addition, the case supports 2.5 W wireless fast charging.
Lastly, its three new microphones have been repositioned to avoid feedback from wind and ambient noise. A Clear Voice Technology has also been implemented to facilitate more natural conversations through the Ear (2) and make it feel like you’re speaking to someone “face-to-face”.
