Rolex Dials Up The Whimsy With ‘Emoji’ Watches That Change Moods Every Day

People who wear Rolexes out will likely remember to put on their coolest, most collected faces. This trio of watches, on the other hand, beseeches you to wear your heart on your sleeve wrist… truly.

At the Watches and Wonders trade show on Monday, the Swiss maker of fine timepieces introduced three new Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 watches, among some other models, that it proclaims are “time stamped with emotion.” The colorful editions—with options of yellow, white, or ‘Everose’ gold—aren’t just much flashier than any Rolex most people have seen, but they’re also more in tune with human emotion, in a way. Each piece is built in with a rotation of uplifting keywords and emojis.

The unusually vibrant additions to the Day-Date 36 range—or emoji watches, as Hodinkee calls them—sport a jigsaw puzzle-themed enamel face, for one. In place of the classic day display window at the 12 o’clock mark, though, is a roster of “inspirational keywords”—reading ‘Happy’, ‘Eternity’, ‘Gratitude’, ‘Peace’, ‘Faith’, ‘Love’, and ‘Hope’—that reveal themselves each new day.

These are accompanied by a curious date window at 3 o’clock where, instead of showcasing the date, it rolls out 31 emojis for every day of the month.

Rolex explains that the design “brings an element of spontaneity into the wearers’ daily life and allows them to invest the reading of time with their changing mood.”

Elsewhere, 10 baguette sapphires in orange, green, red, blue, and yellow mark the hours, further brightening up this puzzling sea of emotion.

Surprisingly, this isn’t the only eye-popping watch that Rolex has announced this week. It also showed off the new ‘Celebration’ Oyster Perpetual, which is enlivened with vibrant bubbles to signify vitality and positivity.
