Google Search Adds New Features That Make It Easier To Verify Information

With the rise of artificial intelligence search bots, it’s now more difficult than ever to verify information found on the internet. For example, when searching for an explanation on complex topics on Google Search, how does one separate fact from fiction?

To commemorate International Fact-Checking Day on April 2, Google is introducing new tools to its Search function that will allow users to be better empowered to evaluate the claims they come across online.

Firstly, the technology giant will be rolling out the ‘About This Result’ feature to all support languages, so users will be able to discern and understand where information from unfamiliar sites is coming from.

This will include a new ‘About This Author’ section to shine a light on the voices behind the words, so everyone’s privy to the background and experience of the authors and websites that appear on Google Search.

From now on, most search results will come with three dots next to them. Simply tap on the icon to learn more about the sources’ history, and why Google Search determined it was a useful reply to the original query.

Plus, relevant searches will include an ‘About This Page’ section to offer more information at a glance about a person, company, or organization related to the query. Users can even type in the URL of the firm to see the box pop up at the top of Search.

In addition, Top Stories will work to display a range of viewpoints on a particular topic, so users can look into all angles of a popular news story. Aptly dubbed ‘Perspectives’, the new feature will showcase insights from an array of journalists and experts for the topic in question.

The carousel, which Google said will only highlight “authoritative and trustworthy information,” will first appear on desktop and mobile to English users in the United States.

Going forward, the technology firm said will continue to work on supporting information literacy, such as by providing training for librarians through the Public Library Association, partnering with MediaWise to expand the Teen Fact-Checking Network to debunk misinformation, and more.
