Michelangelo’s David has sparked much inspiration, creativity, and a thoughtful wonder about the man behind the sculpture and his muse among the thousands of visitors who journey to Florence each year. One would not place such a historical piece at the center of a dispute in a school in Florida, yet here it stands, a divisive ploy that has since caused a principal to quit.
The Tallahassee Classical School had included David in its sixth-grade curriculum for a nude sculpture class. Students were to study the Renaissance masterpiece, taking in the Biblical statue and all his glory as he stands naked with a sling cast over his shoulder.
However, after three parents cited that the masterpiece was “pornographic” and complained about not being alerted to the inclusion of the nude image in the syllabus, the principal, Hope Carrasquilla, was forced to either quit or be fired by the board. According to the Associated Press, the school requires that parents be notified in advance about “controversial” topics.
There was a bit of a miscommunication between the school and parents that had led to this, as letters explaining what the children would be studying had not been sent out.
The debacle caught the attention of the Galleria dell’Academia, where David is housed. Cecile Hollberg, the museum’s director, told the publication that the statue was at the roots of western art and is the height of beauty. “To think that David could be pornographic means truly not understanding the contents of the Bible, not understanding western culture, and not understanding Renaissance art,” Hollberg says.
As a result, the Florida Department of Education has also distanced itself from the school’s decision and the controversy surrounding it.
Dario Nardella, the mayor of Florence, has even tweeted out his thoughts on the situation and invited the Carrasquilla to come down to Italy “to give her recognition on behalf of the city.”
