‘Barbie’ Movie’s Poster Generator Sparks Non-Stop Memes Of Imagined Cast Members
By Alexa Heah, 05 Apr 2023

Wondering who’s starring in the Barbie movie? It’d be easier to list who isn’t. Award-winning director Greta Gerwig has seemingly cast all of Hollywood’s A-list in the upcoming flick, some of whom were recently revealed in a series of posters.
Similar to Mattel’s Barbie boxes, the vibrant spots show portraits of the cast encircled within a frame, each with its own witty tagline describing the character’s role in the film. Ryan Gosling, who stars as Ken, is “just Ken,” while Dua Lipa’s Barbie “is a mermaid.”

It’s no surprise social media has taken to the colorful collaterals, which have now sparked a viral meme, thanks to the filmmakers’ idea to launch the Barbie Selfie Generator. The site allows anyone to reimagine themselves, or anyone, in different iterations of the Barbie poster.
Simply upload a portrait-style photo, wait for the head and shoulders of the subject to be isolated, and Voilà — there’s your very own Barbie or Ken, perfectly overlaid on the same template. Users can even choose to customize the tagline for the faux poster.

Naturally, as with any viral meme, brands have hopped onto the bandwagon as well. Oreo released its own set of advertisements featuring the different versions of its cookies, all on the backdrop of the now instantly-recognizable layout.
Barbie is scheduled to debut in theaters on July 21, 2023.
