Meta Releases Open-Source AI Project That Turns Your Doodles Into Animation

Those looking for a step beyond text-to-image artificial intelligence generators can make use of Meta’s latest open-sourced project—Animated Drawings—which turns anyone’s doodles into animation.
According to Engadget, this isn’t the first time the social media company has hinted at the tool, as it was first released by the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team as a web-based offering back in 2021.
Now, developers can build the full version of the project into other applications, allowing users to simply upload a drawing of a single humanoid figure, or select a pre-drawn example, and watch it turn into an animated version of the sketch.
Those choosing to upload their personal doodles will be asked for consent to use the drawing to train the algorithm, though it’s possible to continue using the program even if one chooses to decline.
Users can choose to animate the figures from a series of preset categories, including dance, funny, jumping, and walking. Despite it being created primarily for human figures, it appears the tool has worked for everything ranging from logos to animal characters.
Meta believes the Animated Drawings project is an example of how open-source applications can be harnessed to lower the barrier to entry for users looking to explore animation and other technology.
“By releasing the models and code as open source, the project provides a starting point for developers to build on and extend the project, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration within the open source community,” the firm said.
