BBC Nordic Officially Opens With Brand Identity Inspired By The Beauty Of Light

When design studio Weareseventeen was tasked with coming up with the branding for the BBC’s newest channel, BBC Nordic, the motions graphics expert decided to go with ‘The Bright Side’—an identity that conveys intelligence, wit, and contrast.
The launch of BBC Nordic sees BBC Brit and BBC Earth merge into a single channel in Scandinavia, providing a “tailored lineup” of programs suited to viewers in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland.

Inspired by light, the designs revolve around the symbol of a light beam—dubbed a “prism edge”—that’s positioned diagonally. The recurring motif pops up on each channel ident and a plus-shaped marque logo for the on-demand Nordic+.
Each of the motion idents shows the emblem in a unique motion, reflecting the different aspects of the channel. ‘Bright Entertainment’ portrays its “spark and optimism,” while ‘Illuminating Moments’ offers viewers enlightening documentaries.

In addition, ‘Warm Connections’ celebrates the relationship between Scandinavia and the UK, and ‘Cultivating Contrasts’ showcases the contrasts of the emotional appeal across BBC Nordic’s wide spectrum of programs.
According to the designers, the prism edge allowed for specific light treatments to be overlaid onto it to reflect particular moods. This allows for the single motif to embody different attributes through the varying movements in which it’s presented.
“It can become the curious documentarian hunting for the best shot in nature, or through its passionate and intense light emission, it raises up and highlights contrasting opinions,” explained the firm.
“Alternatively, it evokes the call and response between a performer and the crowd, bringing that moment of euphoria—always maintaining that the edge is the singular point of focus as it is our gateway to the Bright Side.”
