We live in an age where you can will a collaboration between, say, David Bowie and Billie Eilish, in an instant. The rise of generative artificial intelligence has made it this easy, with a viral simulation imagining the voices of Drake and The Weeknd in one track being one of these more notable examples.
While the Universal Music Group (UMG) quickly weeded out the artificial Drake ft. The Weeknd song from streaming platforms, Grimes—a known futurist and mother to children with names like Æ A-12 and Exa Dark Sideræl Musk—is unsurprisingly open to the notion of integrating AI in music.
Inspired by the fake recording of the two rappers, the musician says people are welcome to generate her voice into their tracks, as long as they issue 50% of the royalties to her when those tracks become successful. “Same deal as I would with any artist I collab with,” Grimes tweets.
“I think it’s cool to be fused with a machine, and I like the idea of open-sourcing all art and killing copyright,” the artist continues.
Grimes adds that her team is working on a program to help hopeful collaborators simulate her voice masterfully. At the same time, her crew is sharing stems and samples so fellow musicians can train their models with her voice.
The crux of this open collaboration is that Grimes is not tied to any label, so creators can “feel free to use my voice without penalty” and with no legal repercussions.
Her only condition—besides royalties—is that programmers refrain from using her voice in lyrics that may be deemed toxic or political, unless the result is for a meme to be shared with a small group of friends.
While Grimes is excited by the possibilities, she also foresees that the idea will fuel “a certain amount of chaos.”
“Grimes is an art project, not a music project,” she continues. “The ultimate goal has always been to push boundaries rather than have a nice song. The point is to poke holes in the simulation and see what happens even if it’s a bad outcome for us.” Well, OK.
Wording was clear: even splits 50/50. if more ppl r involved 33/33/33 etc. besides, we've never chased down an uncleared sample or anything, even by big artists - We don't believe art belongs to individuals. Grimes team has always behaved as such
