Satellite Firm Makes First Two-Way ‘Space-Based Voice Call’ Using Smartphone

It’s happened! Satellite manufacturer AST SpaceMobile, along with the help of cellular provider AT&T, successfully pulled off the first space-based two-way voice call using just a typical Samsung Galaxy S22 smartphone.
According to a press release, this is the first time a direct voice connection has been established from space to an everyday cellular device, which could be a key development in the company’s mission to bring satellite connectivity to 50% of the world that remains in a “dead zone.”
The call tapped into the power of the firm’s BW3 satellite—the largest commercial communications array deployed in low orbit—successfully exchanging Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) information and demonstrating that it was possible to offer space-based 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, and 5G networks globally.
“Achieving what many once considered impossible, we have reached the most significant milestone to date in our quest to deliver global cellular broadband from space,” remarked Abel Avellan, Chairman of AST SpaceMobile.
“While we take a moment to celebrate this tremendous accomplishment, we remain focused on the path ahead and pivotal next steps that get us closer to our goal of transforming the way we world connects,” he added.
