Smart Bike Helmet Lets Riders Indicate Turn Signals With Just A Simple Nod

While built-in LED turn indicators aren’t new additions to bicycle helmets, most of the current iterations require riders to activate the signal with a handlebar-mounted remote control. Now, the Gamel helmet offers a brand-new solution by harnessing the power of a simple nod.

The Paris-based startup recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for the forthcoming product, which features a white LED strip on the front of the helmet to serve as a headlight, and red LED lights on the back that function as an all-in-one tail light, brake light, and turn indicator.

Instead of pressing a button on the remote control while driving, bikers simply have to tilt their heads to the side to indicate if they plan to turn left or right. Once the helmet senses the nod, the amber LEDs on the back will begin to flash accordingly.

Drivers will be alerted that the indicator has been activated through a beep, which will stop, along with the flashing lights, after eight seconds. In fact, the circuit automatically switches off if no movement is detected for over three minutes, in a move to conserve its battery.

Aside from the LED indicators, the helmet—which weighs 12.7 oz—is said to have been cleared by international safety standards, comes with a Fidlock quick-release magnetic chin-strap buckle for easy donning and removal, and can last for up to 10 hours with a three-hour charge.

The anticipated retail price of the helmet is €249 ($273), though it’s uncertain when the product will hit the shelves. Take a look at how it works in the video below.
