In Apple’s latest iOS 17 preview, a plethora of new accessibility capabilities was unveiled, specifically tailored to enhance the phone experience for individuals who are elderly or have disabilities.
Among these additions are ‘Personal Voice’ and ‘Live Speech’. For instance, Live Speech allows users to type any desired text, which the feature then vocalizes.
Personal Voice is a valuable aid for those with degenerative disabilities that could potentially result in voice loss, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It analyzes and stores a person’s speech patterns on the device, ready to be used during FaceTime calls and even in face-to-face conversations.
To set it up, one must read a set of written prompts and record 15 minutes of audio for the iPhone or iPad to learn from. Once activated, the feature utilizes Live Speech to articulate the typed text to reflect the user’s distinctive voice.
This innovation has the potential to be a valuable tool for individuals navigating recent diagnoses, as it assists in regaining a sense of control over one’s body and facilitates communication with familiar friends and family.
The official debut of Personal Voice and Live Speech will take place later this year.
